Driving a one of a kind and very fast car, the Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, with almost 300 hp for just 900 kilograms of weight, thanks to Esperienze in Pista.

This is the true driving experience aboar cars which made the history of rallying. The Maxi Turbo can be exhilarating and exciting. It is and experience for whoever likes “true” cars, with rear wheel drive and a old style attitude. The experience will be held on a racetrack where a qualified instructor will introduce you to the correct hand placement on the steering wheel and the techniques to manage controlled oversteer, typical of such compact and powerful cars. You will discover the technical features of the car, how the French engineers managed to tame this turbocharged animal with the 80s technologies and suspension.

You will also receive technical information on tires, running temperatures and general info on the car, as well as box communication, how to drive on the racetrack, flags and their meaning.

This is a typical schedule for this experience:

8:30 – drivers’ arrival

9:00 – beginning of the theoric lesson and car presentation

10:00 – racetrack entrance to learn trajectories and track features

10:30 – beginning of the test

12:00 – telemetry analysis and debriefing with the instructor

13:00 – delivery of participation certificates

To better enjoy the experience the instructor will show all the car’s features, operating temperatures, oil pressure, the use of the H pattern gearbox and the best gears for every corner, as well as vehicle dynamics such as acceleration, braking, loss of grip, understeer and oversteer.

Renault 5 Maxi turbo

The Renault R5 Turbo has been prepared for the racetrack with almost 300 hp, enlarged wheels and a specific ride to improve the handling.

The first version was born in 1980 with the front wheel drive Renault R5 Turbo, which was quickly renamed “turbone” by the aficionados thanks to its swallowed arches and wheel wells. Unlike other similar cars, the “Regie” technicians wanted to create a real racing car, placing the engine in a rear longitudinal position, almost behind the driver’s back, while the fuel tank was placed underneath the seat for better weight balance. In the forward compartment were located the radiators and the battery, the braking pumps and the spare wheel.

The turbocharged four cylinder engine had a displacement of 1.397 cm3 and a power output of 160 hp at 6.000 rpm in road trim, with a maximum torque of 210 Nm at 3.250 rpm. The fuel injection was a Bosch K-Jetronic unit, with a T3 Garrett turbocharger with air to air intercooler. Thanks to its rear wheel drive, the R5 Turbo can reach 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds with a top speed of over 200 Km/h.

The first version, the Turbo 1, was very light thanks to the abundant use of fiberglass in its construction. The engine was very powerful already in road trim, with mechanical fuel injection and some solutions derived from Formula 1 experience. The following evolutions, such as the 1983 Turbo 2, had bigger fenders and aluminum added to the bodywork instead of fiberglass. The Maxi Turbo was the last evolution, because of the further flared fenders and the higher displacement. This rear wheel drive car won the 1986 Tour de Corse in the World Rally Championship, whilst all other Group B cars were four wheel drive.
